Learning a foreign language helps children to open their minds to the wider world and provides an insight into other cultures. We want our children to develop curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world, and to develop an enthusiasm for learning languages through their lives.  By learning other languages and the about the lives of people who speak them, we develop greater tolerance and  children are supported to develop the British value of mutual respect. We intend for our children to develop basic communication skills in another language through a predominantly oral approach, with opportunities to read and write in another language.

Our intent is for all pupils to:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

We currently choose for all KS2 children to learn Spanish through a structured, developmental programme that allows children to explore the use of speech structures and vocabulary as well as developing an understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
