Our aim for writing is to nurture a love of language and to promote high standards in writing, equipping our children with a strong command of the written word.  We want our children to be able to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

At Roundhill, when we write, we are being authors.  Authors seek to engage their readers by: writing engaging texts to interest others; using a range of skills to add variety to sentences; proof-reading and editing writing to make it the best it can be.  Our writing programme is driven by the use of high-quality fiction and non-fiction texts – both published and teacher-written models (What A Good One Looks Like: WAGOLL).

We incorporate the Talk for Writing model into the teaching of writing to reinforce learning through oracy; through this, children have opportunitites to explore and rehearse the language of writing before recording. Children are encouraged and supported to borrow from the sentence and text structures within these quality texts, adapting and innovating using their own ideas until they can write freely with confidence.

In addition, enquiry work and learning across the curriculum are used as a basis for writing.  

Our long-term plans ensure children experience a balance in genres across each phase of learning, and that the writing of different text-types progresses across the school. 

Our writing is enhanced by using materials from a wide range of online and printed sources, which inspire and engage children in the writing process.  We are also supported by the Somerset Literacy Network, which provides regular CPD for English.
