Digital engineer

Computing, and the ability to use computer technology is a key skill in our ever-changing world.  Computing ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

We intend for all pupils to:

  • understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

Our Computing curriculum comprises a number of different strands: digital literacy, coding, online safety, data handling and using technology in the wider world. Each year group builds on the skills taught during the previous year, to ensure that by year 6 students are confident using technology, including a range of programmes and websites. As a school we take online safety seriously, and teach it throughout the year from Reception to Year 6, using everyday experiences as discussion points on how to be safe online in school and at home.

When we are computing, we are being Engineers.  Most Computing skills are taught discretely, but is also used to support learning across the curriculum, particularly when sharing the outcomes of our enquiries – eg through multi-media presentations.
