Maths at Roundhill Primary School

 

At Roundhill, we believe that mathematics should be both enjoyable and rewarding for all children. As such, we endeavour to deliver learning in mathematics which engages the curiosity of all of our learners. To achieve this, we have worked together to build an approach towards Mathematics which deepens learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills so that all pupils know more, remember more and understand more.

 

Our curriculum is mapped by the White Rose Maths Hub scheme of work (please see the Long Term Planning documents by Year Group below). We focus on a progression from concrete resources, to pictorial representations and finally into the numerical abstract to aid our children’s conceptual understanding. This leads to confidence in all our learners, especially in areas of problem solving and reasoning. Enhancing the oracy skills of our learners through the modelling, rehearsal and application of mathematical sentences is another essential aspect of maths lessons and enables pupils to explain their mathematical thinking.

 

Lessons begin with the teacher modelling the learning. Hinge questions are used to check pupil understanding and to inform in-lesson support to help children keep up with learning; pupils are then given time to answer questions independently. A range of sources are used to support this learning to provide variety and support flexibility in the use of maths. Sequences of learning provide opportunities for children to gain fluency, apply learning and reason about the maths. Children are assessed during the lesson to give extra support to the children who require it, ensuring the majority of children reach the expected level of understanding by the end of the lesson. Same-day interventions are used to help close gaps identified during lessons. From year 2, and with increasing focus in years 3 and 4, children are supported to learn their times tables in readiness for the test which will take place in Year 4.

 

At Roundhill, we aim to illuminate the relevance of Maths and how it underpins daily life by developing pupils' individual grasp of key facts and mental flexibility when working with numbers, whilst ensuring that all children can approach the subject with a sense of awe and enjoyment. Our intent in developing Maths at Roundhill in this way is designed to enable our learners to meet the aims of the National Curriculum in Maths, namely:

 

 

To ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
