Reading

Reading at Roundhill!

Learning to read is one of the most important things your child will learn at our school. At Roundhill Primary School we believe that reading is a vital life skill and one that is high on our priority list. We want your child to love reading – and to want to read for themselves. In reading we aim to develop not only fluency and comprehension but also to foster a life-long love of books and stories. In our school we passionately believe that every child will be a reader.

We make this happen with excellent early phonics teaching, using a wide range of levelled home/school reading books, all children reading to adults in school and with fantastic book corners and a wonderful new library full of brilliant texts. Each year we continue to increase our selection of home/school books to include a broader range of genres, interests and topics.

Reading books are graded by Reading Recovery Book Bands, which is a method of organising books into coloured levels, ranging from the simplest of texts for very early readers, to more complex texts for fluent readers. This system allows children to choose a book at an appropriate level for them and means that our pupils will now have more choice about what they read, hopefully leading to increased enthusiasm for reading. We use a variety of books from a range of publishers to ensure children read a wide range of texts and genres, including access to texts on computer, to support the development of our children as readers.

Teachers regularly read to the children, too, so the children get to know and love all sorts of stories, poetry and information books. This helps to extend children’s vocabulary and comprehension, as well as supporting their writing.
